If you’re looking for an axe that has a decidedly modern J-bass sound but still possesses that passive vintage vibe when you need it, then look no further! The Mayones Jabba Classic 4 is a modern Jazz bass player’s dream. The Aguilar J-70 pickups have lots of growl and snappiness to them. They’re a bit more vintage sounding than the Delano’s that used to come in these. Aguilar’s been making some of the best bass pickups in the business and Mayones uses them on most of their builds nowadays, especially anything that needs to have a touch of old-school to it.

With this bass you have that classic 70’s J-bass tone you’ve likely heard a thousand times (think of Marcus Miller for an active or Geddy Lee for a passive jazz bass sound, for example). Pair that with the Mayo 2-band preamp that boosts (or cuts) the bass and treble EQs at just the right frequencies and it’s a recipe for success. The preamp is very transparent and hi-fi sounding. It’s clean, airy, and vocal-like with a bit of a natural mid-scoop. But if you want something a little more old-school sounding, it’s also possible to bypass the preamp and play the bass in passive mode.

The neck is extremely fast, thin, and flat. It feels awesome and the overall construction of it, especially the fretwork, is extremely precise and allows for this bass to achieve crazy low action. A specially contoured neck heel for easy upper frets access, absolutely expert craftsmanship and overall meticulous attention to detail help make this one of the best modern j-style basses on the market!
