If you’re looking for an extremely versatile axe that has a decidedly modern J-bass on steroids sound but still possesses that passive vintage vibe right at your fingertips, then look no further! Designed for one of Europe’s top bass players (who is also amassing quite the U.S. following), the Federico Malaman signature Jabba 5 is the modern bassist’s answer for those who felt there were some shortcomings in using a traditional jazz bass design with today’s music.

It’s designed to have a rich, thick, and powerful slap tone while not forgetting that a bass needs a lot more than a good slap tone to be versatile and gigable. The best way to describe this is that it just gives you a little more of everything that makes an active J-bass so great. The pickups are a bit more powerful with a bit more punch and a bit more growl to them. It will still feel and sound like a J-bass… Just a very powerful one.

But you can also bypass the preamp on this and dial in some warm, wooly, and old-school sounds too allowing you to use this bass whether you’re looking to stand out on stage or just hang in the back and lay down a supportive groove. The neck pickup, solo’d, can cop a P-bass vibe with no problem. The bridge pickup on its own gives you all of that Jaco goodness but with more body and substance to the notes.

This is really a swiss army knife bass. Overall, it definitely wants to live in that modern hi-fi punchy, growly, and articulate bass tone world. But it has no issues sitting back and mellowing out if you need it to do that. I truly cannot think of any application in which this would not be an appropriate bass. It can pull off just about anything you ask it to.
