Music Store Live is proud to offer up this custom Patriot 5 from our friends over at Mayones! This bass is not only stunningly beautiful but it sounds like a true powerhouse! The combination of the Nordstrand pickups and the Mayones 2-band preamp is a perfect marriage to create what is a killer J-bass on steroids.

The build quality is beyond superb and the action, right out of the box, was really low while still producing clear and buzz-free notes. From top to bottom this feels like a truly boutique and high-end instrument while being an absolute heavyweight in the tone department. The fretwork and overall construction are simply immaculate.

The Nordstrand pickups are some of the best in the business. Carey Nordstrand and his team have been developing superb electronics for quite some time. The Mayones 2-band boost-only preamp is perfect and allows for a special warmth that disappears when the preamp becomes boost/cut (something to do with being able to use different components for the preamp… Sadowsky knows a little something about this). There’s naturally plenty of midrange in the tone, so you won’t be missing anything by not having an onboard control for that. The single-coil in the bridge is based on Nordstrands famous Big Singles pickups which provides a fatter and punchier tone (great for soloing the bridge pickup for that Jaco sort of tone, or favoring with a bit of the neck pickup for some solid growl and a tone that will cut through the mix, or boost the bass and treble a bit and evenly balance the 2 pickups for a killer slap tone!) The ebony fretboard combined with the wenge and purpleheart neck also provide a snappy tone while being balanced in the midrange without some of that scoop you might get out of maple. For a more traditional sound, you’re also able to switch the bass into passive mode and use the passive tone knob to manipulate the tone that way.  

This one’s sure to appeal to funkers and rockers alike. It’s a great modern sounding bass with a “take no prisoners” sort of tone. We’re really thrilled with how this custom build turned out.

Nordstrand Big Blade Pickups

The Big J-Blade is a recent addition to our pickup catalog; a jazz-style single coil with a continuous sensing blade. In order to provide players with a choice in tone, this pickup is offered with either a “warm and wooly” or “clean and clear” wind. As you might have guessed, the names of these winds denote the tone which they have been designed to facilitate. Just as has been demonstrated by our Big Blades, this pickup’s stylish, mean looking blade piece makes sure that each string’s output is accounted for.

The Big Blade is a product of the pursuit of a continuous sensing blade style pickup whose sound is powerful, huge, and ballistically belligerent—something close to our Big Singles but a bit more modern in both tone and appearance. The blade’s radius is designed for even output in most basses, which is analogously derivative of the uniform magnetic field that is sure to capture an accurate representation of each string’s vibrational nature. This pickup is the Spartan of our discriminating pickup regiment; the sonic soldier who wages war against any tonal incongruities that might suggest vulnerability.
